Virtual Reality can be quite isolating if only one person can experience it all alone. Meanwhile, Social VR brings people together virtually and provides a unique opportunity for collaboration that is both immersive and interactive. Social VR collaboration is a perfect solution for the distributed project team, where team members could be physically located in different cities, states, or even countries. Using Social VR, a project team could meet while immersed in the VR model. They can review the project model while taking a virtual tour together. This session will show you how to turn your isolating VR model into a Social VR model, and create a Social VR experience where multiple participants can chat with each other, review the project virtually and take some selfie all while immersed in Virtual Reality. During the class, we will go from Revit, to 3D Max, to Unity with Photon VR for network, and create some avatar prefabs and experience the VR using Vive and Rift VR system. (Joint AU/Forge DevCon class).

AS124599 - Up the Ante: Increase the Reliability of Your Revit Model with Better Modeling Habits
Many designers often feel it can be difficult to create models that accurately express their design intents, often trying to “beat Revit software into submission.” This often leads to poor modeling habits, and in some cases, a complete lack of necessary model geometry, causing coordination issues. In this course, we’ll discuss the common challenges encountered when modeling various types of building elements, and we’ll cover some tips and tricks for overcoming them. We’ll find some solutions are hidden right within Revit, and others may be solved with creative modeling hacks and techniques. We’ll discuss modeling tips that overcome common challenges related to curtain wall and stairs/railings, as well as discuss families/content created that enable special workflow-related code compliance, site plans, and hybrid detailing. All of these techniques can contribute to increased model reliability, better-coordinated designs, and overall increased efficiency and project profits.

AS125767 - A New Design Paradigm in Mixed Reality: Using HoloLens for Architectural Design
Mixed reality (MR) combines virtual and physical realities into one space and offers an exciting new design opportunity for architects. By projecting the Building Information Modeling (BIM) model directly over the physical site in MR, architects can communicate design ideas to the team and clients in an immersive and interactive way. This session will demonstrate MR case studies, using Microsoft HoloLens, applied for different phases of architectural projects. We’ll share our exploration regarding the process of precision alignment of a BIM model with the physical project site. We’ll then use MR for virtual mockup and review of design options. Finally, we’ll examine the potential of MR tools for construction administration and envision on-site MR clash detection using Microsoft HoloLens.

Take a look at how Perkins+Will’s Digital Practice Group has set out to measure real-time performance of the design process. This concept is not to look at what happened, but rather to determine what is happening and what might happen. See how proactive guidance to design teams is possible while offering insight to the business operations. Join us as we reveal which Revit data to gather, how to generate meaningful metrics from the data, and why delivering the information in an easy-to-consume format matters. We’ll lay out the steps taken to define and harvest data, and design and build a monitoring dashboard, and we’ll show how proactive support enhances Revit team performance. This is not the typical Revit dashboard. Designing a scalable backend, our team runs real-time dashboards generating predictive analytical models. Wrangling data from more than 700 active projects and 1,000-plus designers daily, this challenge became an opportunity for Perkins+Will—an opportunity we would like to share with you. This course will cover multiple project case studies from Perkins+Will concerning how virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) were integrated into the design and presentation processes. Each project case study will break down a unique application and strategy using 2D panoramas, VR, and AR within the project. The class will walk through the modeling, software, and hardware workflows involved in creating design content. The demonstration will also cover accessibility techniques in order to be able to deliver these types of presentations to large crowds, regardless of technical skill level. We will examine difficulties, pitfalls, and successes, as well as insight into how well the client reacted and was engaged in the resulting presentation. In addition, all attendees will have the opportunity to experience the case studies in VR.
