This 100-unit luxury apartment building, 3031 Western Avenue, is sited at the northwest end of Seattle’s burgeoning downtown district adjacent to Seattle’s famous outdoor museum, the Olympic Sculpture Park. In deference to its context, the building’s design is disciplined and reserved, allowing the space and figure of the landscape and art to remain in the foreground while the building becomes a frame for viewing art, park, city, water, and mountains beyond. The proposed conceptual design carefully considers the mediation between public and private along the Olympic Sculpture Park edge. The building’s perforated metal surface forms a “folded veil” along the edge of the park and acts as a guardrail, sunshade, and privacy screen effectively preserving light and views to the residents and minimizing heat gain while preventing the possibility of glare in the park.
