Bayer CropScience acquired the former Affymetrix silicon chip manufacturing facility with the goal of converting it into a global center for agricultural research and development. Perkins+Will designed the facility to house agricultural biologics research including: QA/QC labs, Chemistry Labs, APHIS Containment Labs, Formulations and Fermentation Labs and a centralized Glass Wash and Media Prep area. The program also includes a refresh of the public and common use areas, a planned future expansion for the Vegetable Seeds Division, and a Pilot Plant. Perkins+Will transformed this dreary existing facility into an uplifting, state-of-the-art research environment. The new space enables collaboration among scientists, provides plentiful natural light, and maximizes flexibility to adapt with the continual expansion of knowledge and research techniques. The design serves to create and define research neighborhoods with an enhanced wayfinding and hallway experience that provides transparency, putting the research on display. There are ample collaboration spaces where scientists can meet to discuss the research taking place within or where mobile scientists can continue their work. The project was completed on time and on budget, and the team is currently engaged on Phase II design for the Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds division, and a 27,000 square foot (2,510 square meter) Greenhouse.
