Billy and Catherine Lawless engaged Perkins+Will to transform a former McDonald's restaurant space into a refined, rustic, and upscale restaurant concept. Seated at River Plaza, Beacon Tavern features a mix of wood, tile, plaid, globe lights and sconces, and a gas-burning fireplace, evoking an American tavern with a vintage twist. A wraparound, fully landscaped patio overlooking the Chicago River connects the restaurant with the surrounding outdoors. Distressed millwork, antique mirrors, and a hand-sanded tin ceiling are featured throughout the space, giving the restaurant an authentic look and feel. A two-sided fireplace separates the bustling bar area from a more relaxed dining section. To mitigate noise levels between the two, large, sound-acoustical panels were installed on the ceiling.

In order to deliver the Lawless blend of comfort, elegance, warmth and conviviality, Perkins+Will collaborated closely on all aspects of design: restaurant naming, logo design, restaurant collateral, interiors, and web design. The result is a restaurant where the physical space, visual communications, food and hospitality are woven together into a single story.
