Capella Tower

Lobby Transformation

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Project Info
Capella Tower
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Completion Date: 2014
Square Footage: 40,000

The dramatic transformation of the Capella Tower lobby reflects the expanded role a major office building can play in creating a dynamic sense of community--one that welcomes, supports and strengthens organizations and their individual employees alike.

The existing common areas of this iconic, Class A building were previously perceived as cold and uninviting, void of energy and activity. To remedy this, our design reinterprets the building’s existing geometry, materials and finishes, and takes the sleepy and formal office lobby of the last century and re-imagines it as a vibrant and functional alternative workplace that supports today's agile and interconnected business style. To clarify the circulation through the building, we relocated existing vertical circulation elements (escalator and communicating stair) and provided an active backdrop for both levels. Anchored by a fireplace that is a modern riff on the traditional campfire, the Salon is a place to work, gather, socialize and relax. The space’s hip, eclectic and diverse furniture and technology support a variety of activities–from a group conversation to individual work.Technology was integrated throughout all of the spaces for wireless connectivity as well as informal meeting zones for workplace meetings and impromptu collaborative moments.
