Dubai International Airport Concourse 2 and Concourse 3
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Concourse 2: 2009
Concourse 3: 2011
Concourse 2: 7.2 million square foot
Concourse 3: 5.7 million square feet
Consistently been ranked as one of the best airports in the Middle East by the World Airport Awards, the Dubai International Airport is a bold, innovative, and memorable design. Perkins+Will was a subconsultant to Dar Al-Handasah for the exterior and interior architecture and signage for the new Concourse 2 and Concourse 3. Concourse 2 is a 7.2 million square foot 26-gate concourse, part of a larger Phase II expansion plan. Concourse 3 is a 5.7 million square foot expansion designed as a continuation of Concourses 1 and 2. We collaborated for all planning work for the multiple service, retail, arrival, departure, hotel, and service levels within the concourses.
The Perkins+Will team coordinated with the DAR MEP and Structural departments to design and detail the visually distinctive, intelligent, and passive exterior wall system. The design includes an outer rain screen aluminum panel roof, a standing seam metal roof below, monumental point-fixed glass windows, and a skylight that runs along the concourse length. The wall system connects users to the airport surroundings through strong visual connections. Furthermore, the envelope withstands the region’s intense heat, sun, and sand, limiting heat gain into the building while maximizing and controlling daylight from the outside. In addition, our team collaborated to design the custom Arabic patterns on the fritted, point-fixed supported glass and coordinated operable window sections to work with the building automation and smoke evacuation systems.
