Duke University Fuqua School of Business, Ford Library
The new Ford Library at Duke University’s School of Business takes a unique approach to academic library design. Located within the new 86,000 square foot Business School addition, this contemporary library space is over 20,000 square feet and houses a collection of 18,000 volumes in addition to a vast collection of business journals. The library is designed to provide undergraduate and MBA students with a spacious setting that will encourage browsing and relaxation as well as more intense studying that occurs during the short six-week terms. It is a destination and a sanctuary that takes on the image and configuration of a bookstore, with cozy alcoves for reading publications. A two-story reading room extends into the schools’ beautifully wooded site and is furnished with a variety of seating choices for flexibility. All furnishings and materials were designed so the views would not be obstructed. Other flexible design choices include interchangeable shelving, raised flooring, and adjustable task lighting.
