Mississippi Civil Rights Museum
Mississippi Department of Archives and History
Size: 72,500 square feet
As a result of the creation of the Civil Rights Commission by the then-governor and 2011 Mississippi State Legislature, the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum Project (MCRM) was officially established and partially funded. The objective of the design is to create a Civil Rights Museum which is seamlessly integrated with the permanent exhibit within it. The core idea for the permanent exhibit is a space called “This Little Light of Mine”. This space is expressed on the interior by a circular zone at the center of the exhibit. This significant space is echoed in the building form by a sky-lit oculus that extends through the roof plane and is visible from outside the building. This architectural element offers a powerful yet subtle introduction to the stories of struggle and triumph conveyed by the exhibits within the museum.
This project is currently under construction.
