Targeting LEED Gold

Currently under construction, the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Fieldhouse and Mark and Kimbra Walter Athletics Center is a transformational athletic expansion on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus. In response to the client’s goal to inspire “world class student-athletes,” Perkins+Will is incorporating the latest trends in fitness design to promote student wellness and social interaction in the design of this new facility.

Delivered in collaboration with associate architect HOK, the Center will provide the Athletics and Recreation Department with state-of-the-art training spaces, indoor and outdoor practice and competition fields, natatorium expansion, and administrative offices. A large indoor multipurpose fieldhouse will provide space for athletics practice, recreation, club sports, intramurals, and major events.

The site, located at the northern edge of the campus, is adjacent to multiple university athletic facilities as well as student housing. Taking advantage of its prominent location with views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline, the new complex will not only integrate the existing athletic and recreational facilities, student residence halls, and parking spaces, but also create a dynamic environment that is sensitive to the site’s natural setting.
