As a key component in rejuvenating student life on the University of North Texas (UNT) campus, the newly expanded and heavily renovated University Union is part of a larger vision for the transformation of the main campus of the UNT. The new design accommodates public spaces, student gathering, lounge, and study areas, improved food service offering more interior and exterior dining areas, and entertainment and performance spaces. Student activities and organizations spaces anchor the new design with multipurpose dining and lounge space located throughout the main levels of the building. Key programs include a large multipurpose ballroom with capacity for 600 banquet seats, a 500-seat performance and lecture auditorium, and a late-night music performance food service lounge and pub.
Clear entrances and a multi-story atrium establish the basis for the transformation of this previously dark and confusing building. Major new entrances were based on campus circulation patterns and have become beacons to all who approach the building. Interior way-finding was transformed with extensive line of sight access, open walkways, natural daylight, and increased porosity of an entirely new exterior skin. Designed to blend seamlessly with the campus’ core of traditional Georgian architecture, the rejuvenated University Union is an active and engaging hub of student life and will be for generations to come.
