University of Virginia Hospital Expansion

Completion Date: 2019
Square Footage: 430,000 (new) / 90,000 (renovated)

The new University Hospital Expansion will become a center of patient care, forming a network of innovation, research, resiliency, efficiency and flexibility. The 180-bed expansion extends from the existing hospital with a fluid, curvilinear façade that creates a memorable entrance to the University Medical Center.

A new lobby will be provided to serve both the expanded emergency department and the remainder of the hospital. In addition, the new construction will include an expanded and consolidated interventional platform containing four new operating rooms and 12 new interventional procedure rooms. Levels three through eight are designed to accommodate either a 32-bed acute care unit or a 28-bed intensive care unit, providing more appropriate patient rooms for state-of-the-art care delivery.

Relationships to the larger campus context are established through a welcoming entry sequence, a continuation of pedestrian friendly landscaping and the use of locally quarried sandstone common throughout the campus. Large expanses of glass provide sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and lightweight shading devices manage heat gain and glare with minimum interference of patient views.
