Perkins+Will has worked closely with the University of Washington School of Medicine for over a decade on the master plan, program and design of a new off-campus research complex to meet their expansion needs. The multi-phased project totaling over 1.2 million gross square feet is located on a two-block site in Seattle’s South Lake Union (SLU) neighborhood, and has been a catalyst for transforming this area into a hub for biotech research.
Perkins+Will developed the masterplan based on the School of Medicine’s goals of fostering communication, interaction and education between the principal investigators, researchers and faculty to create a top notch facility that also has a strong connection to the South Lake Union neighborhood. Implementation of the masterplan resulted in five phases to create the campus.
Phase 1 involved the renovation of a 1961 office building into over 100,000 SF of office, research, vivarium and auditorium space. Phase 2 was a 440,000 SF expansion for the School of Medicine that consisted of two lab buildings and one administration building. Phase 3.1 provides 317,000 SF of research space with advanced medical equipment including BSL2 and BSL3 research facilities, arming researchers with the tools necessary to address critical health issues. Phase 3.2, currently in design, is a 165,000 SF research tower integrating UW’s retina clinic, diabetes institute, urgent care, and neighborhood clinic with their research labs and offices. Future design of the final phase will complete the Schools of Medicine’s vision for a world-renowned research complex.
