The Baton Rouge Area Foundation envisioned the Water Institute of the Gulf as an opportunity to create an iconic headquarters and a landmark for the City of Baton Rouge. Selected through a design competition, Perkins+Will’s design positions the building above the Mississippi River and aligned with the historic city dock. Inspired by the material and forms found along the Mississippi River, the project features a perforated metal double skin angled to open views over the Mississippi. The new headquarters includes meeting rooms, exhibition space, a gallery, research labs, and administrative space. Supporting the Water Institute’s mission, meeting spaces and research collaboration zones have been designed to engage outside researchers and the public. This facility is the initial phase of a larger 33-acre complex of water science research facilities that support marine sciences throughout the Gulf Region.
