Double Platinum certification for sustainability and wellbeing

The Washington Business Journal explores the new headquarters for the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) in Washington, D.C., designed by our office in that city. The article writes:

The design of an office can have a big impact on wellness, happiness and, yes, productivity — all factors that convinced the American Society of Interior Designers to rethink its own space during a recent headquarters move.

The group traded its 17,000-square-foot building for a 8,500-square-foot office space at 1152 15th St. NW at Columbia Center, pursuing one of the District's first WELL Building certifications administered by the International WELL Building Institute.

Similar to LEED certification, which uses design features to make a building more environmentally friendly, WELL interiors are designed to improve wellness and health for inhabitants. There are plenty of overlaps in wellness and environmental sustainability between the two, and the group's office is also on track to be certified LEED Platinum under the commercial interiors rating system.

ASID had the goal of creating the "Workplace of the Future" for their new headquarters space. The invigorating project achieved double Platinum Certification under both LEED-CI and the WELL Building Standard--a feat that has not been accomplished by any other project to date. The new ASID headquarters is intended to be a living laboratory where collaboration, flexibility, sustainability, and occupant well-being are primary design drivers.
