The Perkins+Will-designed Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) in Singapore has been named Laboratory of the Year by R&D Magazine. Now in its 47th year, the Laboratory of the Year Awards recognize excellence in in research laboratory design, planning, and construction.
CREATE pushes the boundaries of conventional lab design — the buildings are very narrow, and cores and corridors are located at the perimeter to introduce maximum daylight and flexibility. The universal module supports the full range of lab types from computational science, wet biology, dry chemistry, as well as quality office space. CREATE embodies a commitment to exploring and discovering new sustainable technologies. The buildings take advantage of the tropical climate, using wind turbines, green roofs, and daylighting as integral parts of the design.
This unique design establishes CREATE’s brand and resonates as a scholarly center for academia, corporate entrepreneurship, student life and public curiosity. The campus, encompassing 67,000 square meters in four buildings, is intended to support the work of 1,200 researchers. Current participants include the National University of Singapore, MIT, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the Technical University of Munich, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, UC-Berkeley, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ben-Gurion University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Cambridge University.
The Laboratory of the Year awards program will take place during the Laboratory Design Conference to be held at the JW Marriott in Houston on April 9th at 4 pm.
