The Ducks weren’t the only stars at University of Oregon’s men’s basketball opener against Southern Cal (though they did clinch the win). January 13 marked the unveiling of the university’s new 418,000-square-foot Matthew Knight Arena, a mixed-use, state-of-the-art facility. More than 12,000 enthusiastic fans witnessed the big debut.
The world-class building—a campus gateway anchor and visual icon for the university—replaced McArthur Court, dubbed the “Boston Gardens of the West”. The Perkins+Will Branded Environments team, working alongside JMI Sports, TVA Architects and Ellerbe Becket, provided brand experience, interior architecture, environmental graphics and wayfinding+signage.
The discipline’s Brand Experience Master Plan synthesized the unique historical, cultural, social and athletic heritage of the region, university and student body. The resulting design, tailored to the key audience types throughout the facility, creates a memorable experience and a bridge between the school and the community.
