The Los Angeles studio of global architecture and design firm Perkins+Will has appointed David Sheldon to lead its practice focused on mixed-use, corporate, and commercial architecture.
Recognized as a dynamic, transformative leader with over 20 years of experience, David Sheldon’s portfolio includes work on both the landlord and tenant representation side. He has been instrumental on major mixed-use design strategies with companies like Simon, GGP, and Macerich, as well as high-profile tenant-led work with brands such as Equinox, Erewhon, Cinepolis, and SoulCycle.
“David Sheldon joins the LA Practice with a unique set of skills,” says Eric Aukee, the LA office’s managing director. “He is a consummate collaborator and communicator who understands the critical link between a strong personal relationship and the ability to help guide a client’s vision into a strategy for success.”
David’s previous experience includes the launch of the renowned Jerde Partnership in Amsterdam, and the complete rebrand of his former LA-based firm, where he led a strategic implementation that aligned the firm’s business with unique client brands, resulting in unprecedented growth in terms of quality of clients and projects. In 2016, David launched a highly successful annual symposium dedicated to analyzing the future of retail and commercial real estate development.
Sheldon has a reputation for strong leadership and adaptability. Following Europe’s financial crisis in 2008, he began working in the Middle East, North Africa, India, and China, bringing Western design solutions to support these growing economies. With his finger ever on the pulse, David provides clients with a highly unique perspective on the future of international commercial real estate. He will bring this forward-thinking focus and awareness to Perkins+Will, identifying new strategies for growth and impact.
“Tomorrow’s commercial development is a fusion of retail, workplace, fitness, food, and entertainment all colliding,” says Sheldon. “My vision is to leverage Perkins+Will’s capabilities to create enhanced experiential moments across all typologies.”
Sheldon is a Denver native with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Colorado State University. Since returning to the United States in 2011, he has lived in Venice Beach and volunteers with several local environmental and design organizations, including a non-profit concert series he started with his wife to engage the community through musical storytelling. Currently, he is vice chair of the Urban Land Institute’s Entertainment Development Council.
