University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia, Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) is an internationally recognized research institution whose mission is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable building and urban development practices. Designed to exceed LEED Platinum, this "living lab" includes integrated building systems, comprehensively monitored and centrally controlled, that will meet the four net-positive goals in energy, embodied carbon emissions, operational carbon emissions and water quality.

"CIRS is an exemplary building, using strategies that include the extensive use of local wood to go beyond Deep Green," says Peter Busby. "This building reaches out to the rest of the UBC campus, putting sustainability on display to educate and inspire."
