Project Info
Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail
Atlanta, Georgia
Size: 35 acres (2.5 mile corridor length)

The Westside Trail is the second finished segment of the Atlanta BeltLine, the nation’s most celebrated “smart growth” infrastructure project.  Building on the success of the Eastside Trail project led by Perkins + Will, this trail adds 2.6 miles to the eventual 22-mile loop around the city.  The trail converts a former rail corridor into a dynamic linear park that connects ten neighborhoods, creates safe access to shopping and schools, and provides access to more than 30 acres of new greenspace for the city.  The path has 14 access points and reserves space for a planned transit corridor.  The tree-lined path also serves as a linear arboretum with 1,417 new trees and 17.5 acres of native meadow planting.   The trail sets the stage for urban living by providing a flexible venue that will evolve with the community over the long term. The Westside Trail encourages Atlantans to experience this part of the city outside of their cars for the first time. In this sense, the trail is a model for how landscape infra-structure can create positive long-term environmental, economic, and social change.
