Broad Institute - 301 Binney Street
Square Footage: 80,000
The Broad Institute, a multi-institution, multidisciplinary biomedical organization combining researchers from MIT, Harvard, and affiliated organizations, needed expansion space to support its tremendous growth and research initiatives. The institute reached out to Perkins+Will to create a flexible research environment that could easily respond to changes in research and funding while promoting collaboration among its researchers.
Conceived without knowing which user groups would ultimately occupy the space, the layout had to be general enough to accommodate all groups, yet adaptable enough to support the specific, highly-technical demands of the user groups which would eventually move into the space. The utility distribution from overhead service carriers along with flexible benches allow for entire floors to be reconfigured to accommodate alternative science programs, new equipment, or the introduction of new faculty and staff.
The design of this world-class research facility takes advantage of the building’s long and narrow footprint by creating a “streetlike” plan organization which requires occupants to interact with as many people as possible as they move along internal routes of circulation. “Scientific Living Rooms”, conversation areas equipped with soft-seating, open work tables, and sometimes a kitchen, are located strategically along these paths to facilitate chance meetings between researchers from different program groups to encourage synergistic problem-solving.
