Charlotte Douglas International Airport Concourse A Expansion
Charlotte, North Carolina
Project size: 236,000 square feet
Providing an entirely new architectural identity for one of the country’s ten busiest airports, the new Concourse A Phase 1 Expansion at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) provides a gateway experience for the 44.4 million travelers arriving and departing each year. The $200 million project is an anchor component of “Destination CLT,” a $2.5 billion airport capital investment program by CLT and the City of Charlotte.
A central goal of the client and the design team was to redefine the passenger experience at CLT with an imaginative take on what an airport experience should entail. Visitors are welcomed into a soaring, two-story glass enclosure with welcoming spaces for working, dining, shopping, and relaxing. Curated digital artwork is displayed along one of the largest LED media walls in the world. Daylight streams throughout the 250,000 square-foot concourse, bathing travelers in natural light.
Moving forward, travelers enter a 750-foot secure corridor that connects the new concourse to the airport’s existing circulation network. The glass-walled corridor’s location - adjacent to the airport’s main entry drive – provides a sweeping visual connection to both landside and runway-side activities.
