Duke Health Bed Tower Addition
Durham, North Carolina
The new 490,000 square foot, 13 story, bed tower addition to Duke’s Medical Hospital complex will include 350 flexible patient rooms to accommodate varying degrees of acuity. Divided into Pediatrics and Adults platforms, the Bed Tower Addition (BTA) will act as a transition stage to allow for a campus wide renovation to the patient care. In addition to patient rooms, the new facility will house a small Pharmacy and building support services on the lower two floors, and a Pediatric Cath Lab on the first floor.
The form of the BTA is directed toward the iconic Duke Chapel. Doing so is not only a gesture to this important icon for the University but also accomplishes two other objectives: preserving daylight to and views from an existing adjacent bed tower, and fitting the building foundations within a very oddly formed zone defined by major campus utility corridors on three sides.
