50 Prescott Street is the second development in the Gateway Park Life Sciences Campus at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), designed to create additional space for academic and life science research programs. The building, designed by Perkins+Will melds the elegant cadence of the surrounding 100-year old brick mill buildings with the energy and expression of a cutting-edge biotech incubator. The space is designed for lease tenants in need of teaching and research laboratory space, and allows for both single and multi-use tenants from academia and industry.
An overall goal of Gateway Park is to bring together academic and private research programs to encourage collaborative research opportunities. Building tenants include research incubators such as the MBI BlueSky Biotech Company, as well as academic research programs including WPI’s Fire Protection Engineering Lab, the Bio-Engineering training center (BETC), and the WPI School of Business. In addition to a range of wet lab and specialty research facilities, the building also includes a residential scale burn lab facility as part of the Fire Protection Engineering Program for air dispersion studies involving large scale burns and various environmental factors, housed in a contiguous but separate two story wing.
The core and shell of 50 Prescott are designed to achieve a LEED Silver Certification, focusing on daylight harvesting and energy efficient building systems suitable for research environments.
