SIZE 10,552 square feet
Perkins+Will was hired to design a new vision for this repeat client’s 7th and 8th grade library. Two in-depth student workshops were held to create this vision. The new library space accommodates both small group collaboration and full class instruction, and students and staff have more opportunity to interact side-by-side rather than the traditional front vs. back of the classroom. The user groups desired a more open look and feel, so the team increased both the visual and physical connectivity of the existing classrooms. They flank the library space to encourage interactivity and flexibility between these two functional areas.
Ceilings are exposed, taking advantage of additional height and allowing for a small array of bleacher-style seating. This bleacher seating is double-sided, allowing for both a presentation side and informal collaboration side. The “campfire”, creates another flexible zone that can accommodate large groups or more casual gatherings in the corner rotunda. All furnishings, including bookshelves, are flexible to allow for multiple uses. The community is very important to Deer Path families, thus it was important that this space function as a hub for learning and activity, even outside of school hours.
