Inova Mount Vernon Hospital Bed Tower Expansion
Square Footage: 56,000
This new inpatient 40-bed tower expansion at Inova’s Mount Vernon Hospital is comprised of three floors located above the existing hospital space. The top two floors, each with 20 patient beds, were added to support Inova’s joint replacement and rehabilitation programs with a third floor of shell space below to accommodate future expansion.
Each patient floor includes central team stations for nurses, family waiting areas, and auxiliary patient spaces. Additional programmatic components include a physical therapy gym, daily activity spaces, and a patient living space. V.I.P. accommodations are provided on both floors for local, national, and potential international clients.
The patient room module was based on the existing column grid and structure, which required a more narrow patient room. As these patient units were designed for orthopedic rehabilitation and joint replacement patients, a sensitivity toward accessibility was required. Wider corridors and patient handrails were strategically placed to offer patients space to practice walking with support.
The central team stations include both curbside and step-in nursing stations, an enclosed team room, medications and nourishment areas, as well as equipment alcoves. The central team station design factors in various workstyles— collaboration at stand-up surfaces, sit-down conversations at the desks, and private conversations in enclosed areas.
