Istanbul Neighborhood Vision Planning
COMPLETION DATE: 2015
We are at the forefront of urban regeneration planning in Istanbul.
Istanbul is planning for a district-by-district reconstruction of the city compelled by two critical issues: (1) an explosive population growth and (2) the imperative to bring large areas of the city into conformance with seismic building standards (as Istanbul is in an active earthquake zone). These forces are leading to large scale rebuilding of the city. Perkins+Will’s planning efforts represent the creation of a replicable redevelopment strategies that focus on accommodating contemporary redevelopment while maintaining the history and character that make Istanbul one of the most beloved and visited cities in the world.
As the first urban redevelopment efforts of this kind in the city, each project builds on an understanding of the place and its future trajectory. Varying in size, scale and impact, the projects share a set of planning principles that are bespoke to Istanbul’s particular urban environment that have been paired with strong resilient values. Each project reconciles difficult land development issues, respects the existing character by adapting and reusing urban structures (street networks, civic buildings, community spaces) and aspires to create dynamic urban centers that promote livability through design, amenities and new signature public spaces for the city.
