New York University’s Stern School of Business retained Perkins+Will to renovate and link all undergraduate instructional space in the two basement levels of its three buildings. By reconfiguring lobbies and entry sequences to emphasize connectedness and transparency, we helped NYU reinvent the image it presents to the City and broader business community.

The heart of the 110,000 square foot (10,220 square meter) project is an expanded entry and lobby made clearly visible from the plaza and street and a new 3-story atrium that carries light and energy from the plaza level down to the two concourses below. The installation of walkable skylights and vertical penetrations also brings natural light into the main corridors of both lower levels, tying them together into a single, daylit space.

The final design transforms an existing rabbit warren of vintage 1970’s classrooms into a state-of-the-art instructional center. The new classrooms are linked to one another by inviting light-filled corridors, which are in turn punctuated by casual lounge and gathering spaces. These touch-down areas promote interactions between students and faculty that serve to create an academic community.
