Newcastle Recreation Centre
Municipality of Clarington
Newcastle, Ontario, Canada
Square Footage: 70,000
A sloping remnant of agricultural land and an abstraction of the architecture of the Ontario farming compound inform the design of this 70,000 SF complex in the Municipality of Clarington, Ontario.
A series of timber framed, sloping roofs frame a sheltered entry court and signify the respective program volumes of aquatics centre, gymnasium and multi-use rooms.
The building's order extends into the surrounding landscape, creating a series of terraces which organize parking, drop-off zones and exterior recreation areas.
A second phase will see a twin pad arena occupy the lowest terrace of the site design, allowing the natural landforms to screen the ice rinks and their associated services.
