The Perkins+Will Interior Design and Branded Environments disciplines were tasked with designing a work space that reflects a new approach to design collaboration for the Newell Rubbermaid Design Center. Daylight, long-day use, and diverse teaming situations were important factors considered in the Perkins+Will design team’s approach. The space was born out of this effort and consists of flexible teaming hubs, private incubators, lounges for unexpected imagination, and tools that compliment and assist.
The design team worked closely with the project stakeholders to create an inspiring work environment that embodies the spirit of design, while allowing a neutrality for the creation of new products. Collaborative working spaces like the immersion labs (identified by the large numbers lining the walls) are areas where multiple disciplines converge to develop innovative product solutions.
The team crafted a clean palette of materials native to western Michigan, keeping the colors neutral and natural with ground concrete floors and white walls allowing wood elements to be highlighted in the design. While many of the desking systems were re-interpreted from existing Newell Rubbermaid inventory, the team augmented the systems with signature Herman Miller pieces that are manufactured very close to the site, and represent the importance of good design.
Newell Rubbermaid’s history, values and roots were explored in the patent super graphics and brand elements embedded into the interior architecture, creating a timeless and fresh daily environment. Patterns, textures, and sculptural approaches express creativity, and offer rhythms of inspiration. New patterns are key within this environment, as all design studios are intermixed, which is a new precedent for the Newell Rubbermaid’s corporate and innovation culture.
