North Hennepin Community College, Bio-Sciences and Health Careers Center
Brooklyn Park, Minnesota
Square Footage: 62,500
The new Bio-Sciences and Health Career Center (BHCC) is designed to create connections, facilitate collaboration and provide an innovative space for education. Serving the Nursing, Bio-Science and Medical Lab Technology programs, the facility consists of classrooms, tiered lecture rooms, bio-science labs, home-care room, Nursing labs, simulations rooms and two BioLounges. On a commuter campus, these BioLounges will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and social interaction among students and between students and faculty. In addition to nurturing a sense of community within the college, glazed walls and large openings increase visibility between the College and the surrounding neighborhood — creating a window to the community.
Augmenting the connectivity afforded by the physical space, technology is incorporated into the design that provides students and faculty with new ways of connecting, collaborating and learning both on and off campus . A telepresence room creates a space for life-size interaction with faculty and students at other institutions. A cyber cafe will provide wireless access in a relaxed setting, and meeting rooms will host the latest technology and software designed specifically for collaboration. In learning environments, technology will enhance student experience with instantaneous feedback. Student performance in simulation rooms that mimic clinical, medical supply and in-home care can be monitored in real-time and reviewed in debrief rooms with faculty and other students.
