When Children’s National Medical Center’s (CNMC) needed to expand to another floor in their Northern Virginia location they chose Perkins+Will to design this Regional Outpatient Clinic.

The 21,800 SF pediatric clinic includes neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, pulmonary, allergy, and behavioral medicine services. The design team introduced universal exam rooms—new for CNMC’s clinics—to solve patient scheduling inefficiencies and increase patient throughput. Additional clinical functions include spaces for consult, diagnostics, patient education, staff teaming, and telemedicine.

Patients range from infants and children to adolescents and expectant mothers. Colors and finishes were selected to appeal to all patient types and to enhance wayfinding. Wayfinding through the clinic is accomplished through strategic placement of color and custom graphics, within the CNMC standard finish package, while avoiding over-stimulation. Access to natural light within the space was a priority for stress-reducing properties. To maximize daylight, all circulation ends at an exterior windows and all waiting and teaming space has access to daylight.
