Portage and Main
City of Winnipeg
Known as the Crossroads of Canada, Portage and Main is the most famous intersection in Canada. In 1979, the City of Winnipeg closed the intersection to people, forcing pedestrians to an underground concourse connecting shopping malls under the four corner properties. When the City asked to study the effects to traffic if pedestrians were reintroduced to the intersection, we reframed the question: How could we create a welcoming and vibrant public realm, celebrate the history and heritage of Portage and Main, and enhance the connectivity?
