Siemens Wind Turbine Production Facility
Siemens Real Estate
Green Port Hull, United Kingdom
Size: 77 hectares
Siemens Real Estate appointed Perkins+Will to design a production facility complex in the Humber estuary to assemble 6MW, offshore wind turbines with rotor blades spanning 85 metres.
The complex will include a turbine assembly line at Alexandra Dock West in Hull and blade manufacturing facility at Paull, adjacent to the Port of Hull, which will be the longest industrial facility in Europe with a maximum footprint of 500 metres long and 80 metres wide. To complete the development, a third facility will be built on Alexandra Dock East for the maintenance and servicing of the operating turbines.
The project, with a total site area of 77 hectares, owned by Associated British Ports (ABP), will comprise a 350,000 sq ft turbine assembly and blade construction facility, 220,000 sq ft warehousing and maintenance areas, 36,000 sq ft office space and 29,000 sq ft welfare facilities. Completing this development are external car parks for 700 cars along with the associated operating spaces including: marshalling areas for lorries, loading bays and internal roads to service the entire complex.
Perkins+Will's challenge was to create an architectural yet efficient design that would accommodate and integrate the wide range of services and production requirements of the three facilities, taking into account budget, technical requirements, the size of the turbines and potential plans for future expansion.
The project is due to complete in 2016.
