Perkins+Will provided master planning and full architectural design and tenant fit-out services for West Virginia University (WVU) Healthcare’s new three-story, 110,00 GSF, ambulatory care center located in Morgantown, West Virginia. This building provides services for the local Morgantown residents, students, and local communities within Monongalia County.

The building includes centers for bariatric, behavioral medicine, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, endocrinology, family medicine, geriatrics, lab, OB/GYN, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, podiatry, rheumatology/pulmonary, sports medicine, and urology. It also includes a conference center with separate access, which supports a variety of educational programs for the clinic as well as the community.

The design criteria was to establish order and purpose of WVU’s planning by challenging the building mass, layout, and shape. The resulting building parti organized the patient and staff circulation around a central three-story atrium and placed waiting zones adjacent to natural daylight and the spectacular mountain views.

Critical to the planning of the building was the organization of a flexible “On-Stage / Off-Stage” medical pod design that supports WVU’s method of providing care to their patients and families. In this model, patients enter exam rooms from a patient corridor and the providers enter from the opposite side of the patient room so that all back-of-house tasks are confined to the staff areas.
