Sapna Bhat

RA, LEED AP BD+C
Associate Principal, Health, Dallas

When Sapna left Bangalore, India, to pursue her master’s degree at Texas A&M, she carried with her a love for design, a desire to help people, and two suitcases. In the years since, she has played a lead role in all phases of healthcare architecture—from master planning and medical planning to documentation and construction administration—developing a specialty in cancer centers. Her desire to help people has crystallized in her pursuit of oncology design that serves emotional as well as physical well-being. While building her knowledge base, Sapna studied cutting-edge technology in Japan; met physicians, physicists, and equipment manufacturers around the globe; and deepened her commitment to a better patient and caregiver experience.

Sapna has worked at Perkins&Will for more than two decades, and in addition to her project work, she helps our Dallas studio grow with daily attention to mentorship.

“We all know of someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, and I’ve always wanted to help reduce the burden on these patients. As designers and planners, we must prioritize solutions that are holistic, sustainable, and empathetic.”
People-First Design

In 2017, UT Southwestern challenged us to design a new radiation oncology building and “rethink everything.” From circuitous routes to a lack of medical storage space, the existing facility was inefficient, cluttered, and disorienting. And the radiation vault itself—an underground, windowless room made of thick concrete—made people uneasy.

Sapna and the team did, in fact, “rethink everything,” creating a more streamlined, soothing experience for patients and clinicians, from start to finish. They also introduced a new vault design which “fosters collaboration and efficiency like no other in the world,” according to UT Southwestern Medical Center oncologist Dr. Robert Timmerman: “I truly believe the design has improved outcomes and saved lives.”

For Sapna, dance brings equanimity and balance to life. Here she performs with her students.
fun fact

Outside of architecture, Sapna enjoys reading, spending time outdoors, and being with her family—and she loves to dance. She is trained in Indian classical dance and in her spare time she teaches, choreographs, and performs.
