Julio Colon

Associate Principal, New York

Julio had an artistic inclination from a very young age. As a child, he would create storyboards featuring his own interpretation of the movies he saw when he was eight years old, which eventually formed his passion for design. Born in New York and raised in Puerto Rico, he discovered the inherent roles the impact and influence of different cultures have on their respective environments. As he engaged with his surroundings and formed a deeper understanding of the two cultures he was born into, he was driven to study architecture.

A scholarship from Pratt greenlit the path that allowed him to achieve his dream of becoming an architect, the role with which he identifies first and foremost, before anything else. Throughout the years as he was exposed to a variety of project types, he discovered that not only was he creative, but he was also a natural problem solver. The combination of the two led to his interest in technical design. At Perkins&Will, he was given the platform to have a voice and to develop meaningful, creative solutions to the challenges we face everyday.

“I see the craft of design as the process by which our ideas are transformed into beautiful, tangible, experiences that shape our reality. Without the physical integration of materials, systems, and assemblies that make our projects real, they remain in a theoretical realm…I help bridge the gap and make things happen.”
Part of Julio’s growth as a firm leader is rooted in his participation in a variety of different aspects of our studio’s culture. He is a strong advocate for innovation and has led the New York studio to producing some of the highest quality documentation sets within the firm.
Julio is an artist at heart. His passion for paintings, film, architecture, music, and stories was fostered by his father and grandmother who always left a door open for creative expression. Now, he shares his passion with his children.
Julio likes to apply techniques such as watercolor with a chaotic yet precise splatter form to create abstractions balanced with literal imagery. He hopes to someday have his own exhibit to showcase his art to the world.
Julio also enjoys martial arts. He started practicing Chinese Kung Fu at a very young age, after being influenced by the martial arts he saw in various movies. Julio still practices today and has incorporated other forms of martial arts into his routine such as Judo, Capoeira and Brazilian Jiujitsu.
