Matt Billerbeck

AIA
Principal, Retail Practice Leader

Matt is a seasoned retail design leader with more than three decades of experience guiding high-profile mixed-use and retail developments across North America, the Middle East, and Asia. He thrives on designing complex and vibrant ecosystems that connect people, culture, and commerce.

Among his first clients were John and Bruce Nordstrom (yes, that Nordstrom!), who taught him the crucial importance of customer experience at their original flagship store in Seattle. Matt’s practice has since grown to include large mixed-use developments and retail consulting on landmark projects like the World Trade Center transit hub in Manhattan.

As a consensus-driven leader, Matt enjoys creating opportunities for brilliant people to do their best work. He excels at collaborating with multiple stakeholder groups, including developers, municipal authorities, tenants, and community members.

Consensus isn’t about convincing people. It’s about helping them understand possibilities so they can see the best solution.

Matt looks at the patterns of everyday use as a starting point for architecture. Creating a dialogue between daily life and the built form is central to the iterative process as the design takes shape.
fun fact
Matt was born and raised in Chicago’s south suburbs and is thus, through no fault of his own, a lifelong fan of the White Sox.
