Matthew Krissel

FAIA, LEED AP
Principal, Design Director, Philadelphia

Matthew designs for lasting impact. For over two decades, he has led the creation of architecture that defines institutions and reshapes experiences, from international landmarks to small homes with big ideas. Now as Design Director, his design philosophy is a leading voice in both our New York and Philadelphia studios.

For Matthew, the project brief is only the starting line; the real work is discovering what a project can become. He leads with inquiry, establishing a clear vision as the foundation and grounding the work in both strategy and pragmatic optimism. People and context are the primary materials. Together with his team, Matthew translates complex variables and constraints into opportunity and purpose, designing only what is needed and building it to last.

Partnering closely with clients, Matthew leads design with the aim to create change, challenging people and institutions to think beyond the ordinary and elevate the work. The goal is always the same: beautiful, sustainable places that enrich lives, strengthen communities, and expand our collective potential.

"Design is a collective act, a dynamic process of listening, observing, inventing, and exploring ideas and opportunities. Synthesis and editing bring clarity, purpose, and identity to the work, expanding its impact, usefulness, and longevity."
Matthew is the father of one extraordinary person.
Matt enjoys a photography hobby, as it enhances his capacity to observe his surroundings. This shot of Richard Serra's Torqued Ellipses is from a recent visit to the DIA Beacon. The art and architecture combine tension and harmony to encapsulate simplicity, timelessness, and functional beauty.
"It is easy to get excited about design on a surface level, making beautiful things and putting them out into the world. The more challenging but rewarding work comes when you create inspiring spaces that transform how we live, work, learn, or play—creating environments that expand our collective potential, purpose, and the value of the built environment."
