Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Building

São Paulo, Brazil

The Oscar Santos Emboaba building is one of several projects our São Paulo studio has designed for the developer Pedra Forte. Located on Rua Artur de Azevedo, in Pinheiros, a western neighborhood of São Paulo, the building’s boutique feel represents the future of workplaces everywhere.

Oscar Santos Emboaba’s facade bursts into the landscape with playful, alternating angular projections that increase natural lighting and ventilation in the interiors. The feature highlights the contrast between the wood on the balcony linings, visible from the sidewalk, and the concrete below.

“We found inspiration in Asian design, both in opting for overlapping geometric elements and in choosing antagonistic materials that, when combined, convey a sense of harmony,” says Douglas Tolaine, Design Principal at our São Paulo studio.

The building references two traditional designs from Asia: wafu, a Japanese construction technique that uses wooden fittings, and Tangran, a Chinese puzzle made up of seven geometric pieces, whose reinterpretations appear on the facade.

The concept seeks to provide greater integration between spaces in addition to healthier and more customizable environments which adapt to the needs of users.

The mixed-use program consists of 16 floors of offices that range from 300 to 600 square meters. Two active facades at ground level and three basements are organized to meet the demands of users and integrate within the city. The core is located laterally, facilitating the occupation of the large slabs, which can be divided into two identical sets.

Water-saving systems, flow restrictors, dual-flush toilets and motion sensors are among the best practices implemented to ensure rational use of natural resources. The flower boxes on the balconies highlight the interdependent relationship between people and nature by promoting comfort and well-being.

Free from structural interference, solid slabs without intermediate beams provide a variety of occupancy and layouts while facilitating the movement of people. The generous balconies foster the connection between outdoors and indoors. while high-performance frames ensure acoustic comfort within the building.
