Margaret Cavenagh, a celebrated design leader in Chicago for over 30 years, steps in to lead the firm’s founding studio. Lindsey Peckinpaugh, who served as managing director since 2021 and was named Perkins&Will’s president in 2024, now moves into the president role full-time.

CHICAGO—Perkins&Will has appointed award-winning designer Margaret Cavenagh, a well-known and respected member of the Chicago architectural community, as managing director of the firm’s founding studio. Cavenagh, whose professional credits include the residential tower Solstice on the Park and the not-yet-completed O’Hare Global Terminal, succeeds Lindsey Peckinpaugh, who was named president of the firm last year. With Cavenagh’s appointment, Peckinpaugh moves into the firmwide presidency full-time.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Margaret to the firm,” says Peckinpaugh. “A true design leader, Margaret brings a unique ability to think holistically about our people, our work, and our business. I’m confident she’ll do a great job of carrying forward the design legacy of the founding studio of our firm—one built on innovation, environmental stewardship, and community engagement—with purpose and passion.”

Chicago’s New Chapter

Cavenagh joins Perkins&Will with 32 years of experience in architecture and interior design, having partnered with clients in the public, private, cultural, institutional, corporate, and residential sectors. For two decades, she served as a design principal at one of the nation’s leading Chicago-based firms, where she helped grow the practice from 10 employees to 140, and played a key part in securing some of that practice’s most significant commissions. This is especially pertinent as she steps in to lead one of Perkins&Will’s largest and most prolific studios.

“Becoming managing director for Perkins&Will’s founding studio is both an incredible honor and a responsibility I take to heart,” Cavenagh says. “The firm was built on the belief that ideas and buildings should always serve the broader goals of society, and this design legacy motivates me. I’m grateful that, under Lindsey’s leadership, the Chicago studio has established a strong foundation for an inclusive, design-driven culture. I’m here to build on that—to inspire, empower, and create spaces that truly uplift and move people.”

Cavenagh is a well-established figure in the Chicago design community, with a portfolio that includes the Media Production Center for Columbia College Chicago; the Powerhouse at Beloit College, a transformation of a former coal-burning plant into a student union; the ARCUS Center for Social Justice Leadership in Kalamazoo; and the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock. Earlier in her career, she worked for a prominent Chicago developer on several of the city’s high-rise construction projects.

“Chicago has always been an incubator for new ideas, risk-taking, and innovation, particularly in design,” she says. “I’m excited to keep that energy flowing into our workplace at Perkins&Will.”

Cavenagh is an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). She holds a Master of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia (UVA), where she is chair of the School of Architecture’s Dean’s Advisory Board. She is also currently a lecturer in UVA’s graduate program.

Going Firmwide Full-Time

After nearly four years as managing director of the Chicago studio, Lindsey Peckinpaugh becomes Perkins&Will’s president full-time. While she was elevated to this firmwide position in 2024, she maintained her studio leadership responsibilities. Now, she will focus on the core business—management, operations, and design—while partnering closely with CEO Phil Harrison and the board of directors on global strategy. Harrison, who had previously served as president for 21 years, continues to be CEO and chairman—roles he’s held for the last 19 years.

“Together with Phil and our executive leadership, I look forward to finding creative ways to manage the growing complexities of our firm and the global market,” Peckinpaugh says. “As president, my responsibility is to uphold and advance holistic excellence across Perkins&Will—our people, our work, and our business. I’m committed to ensuring creativity, community, and care are at the heart of every decision, setting our teams up for success so they can focus on what they do best.”

“Over the last year, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Lindsey on several strategic efforts at the firm, and we’ve developed a strong and complementary partnership style,” Harrison says. “Her holistic thinking about our business, empathic approach to leadership, and collaborative spirit will—I have no doubt—shepherd us toward a very successful future.”
