Oana Gavriliu

MARCH
Associate Principal, Health, London

Oana is a Healthcare Architect with a depth of expertise developed through working on a wide range of healthcare buildings and commissions. She has harnessed her knowledge of the sector into a deep-rooted commitment to driving the provision of the highest standards of healthcare design.

Growing up in Bucharest, Oana was drawn to the world of creativity from a very young age and envisioned herself as an artist. However, it was her grandmother, a primary school teacher, who saw her potential in architecture. Playing with Lego and excelling in math, Oana’s artistic spirit took a purposeful turn towards design. From the age of twelve Oana knew she wanted to pursue a path in architecture, where she later went on to gain a place at Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest.

A significant chapter of Oana’s journey as an architect was the year she spent working in Australia, which left an indelible mark on her design approach. She was captivated by the Australian approach to teamwork, communication, and debate. Being immersed in a working culture where diverse and honest perspectives were not only accepted but celebrated, Oana saw how purpose-driven and open collaboration allows for an efficient design process and more impactful architecture. Seeing the power of this approach, Oana became an advocate for teamwork and transparency throughout the design process.

The Sydney Opera House, with its quirky yet enduring design and unique blend of form and function, is one of Oana’s favourite buildings.

Driven by a desire to contribute to the greater good, Oana was drawn to healthcare architecture. For her, it’s about supporting individuals through the best and worst times, creating spaces that enhance the human experience for both patients and those who dedicate their lives to healthcare. Passionate about innovation, Oana believes in the power of architecture to delight, calm and contribute to the wellbeing of patients, their families, and hospital staff.

Oana lives in London with her partner and two daughters. When she’s not working you’ll find her tackling DIY projects around the house, enjoying leisure time with her family, music festivals, and seaside or skiing holidays.
