Denver Studio Announces Retirement of Andy Barnard

After practicing architecture for 35 years Andy Barnard retires with a portfolio full of noteworthy design solutions.

DENVER, Colorado—Global architecture and design firm Perkins&Will announced today that Andy Barnard of the Denver studio is retiring.

The announcement follows previous leadership changes the studio underwent in January and marks a successful career for Barnard, who worked with the practice for 33 years and was an integral part of the Sink Combs Dethlefs merger with Perkins&Will in 2017. Barnard served as president of Sink Combs Dethlefs since 2009 and became managing director of Perkins&Will’s Denver studio immediately following the merger.

Barnard retires with a portfolio of exceptional design solutions with an emphasis on stewardship of resources for the firm, the client, and the environment. His colleagues fondly reflect on their time with him in the studio.

“I have spent the last three decades working with Andy.” says marketing director and principal Jenny Stephens, “He’s been a great leader, partner, and friend to me and many of us in Denver. While we will miss his talent, compassion and sense of humor in the office, we’re excited to celebrate this important milestone with him. He’s earned it!”

Here are a few of the projects Barnard has led over the years:

2013

University of Wyoming Arena Auditorium and RAC Renovations

Born and raised in Wyoming, Barnard worked on a variety of projects at the University of Wyoming during his career, one of those being the Wyoming Arena Auditorium and RAC Renovations. Completed in 2013, Perkins&Will partnered with the University to transform its 14,000-seat Arena/Auditorium into a completely new fan experience. Barnard acted as Managing Principal on this innovative and cost-effective project, addressing the inherent challenges of the original design, and ultimately creating an inclusive, state-of-the-art facility for all fans to enjoy.

2014

NFL Denver Broncos – Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse at UCHealth Training Center

Completed in 2014, Barnard lead a project team that allowed the Denver Broncos to practice under cover throughout the year, no matter the elements of the unpredictable Colorado weather. Sink Combs Dethlefs, now Perkins&Will, was awarded the project following a national design competition. The facility includes a full-size practice field, training facilities, hospitality spaces, media space, and amenities for fans to attend training camps and practices. The facility elevated the Denver Broncos practicing capabilities and is still in use year-round today.

1991

CU Dal Ward Athletic Center

One of Andy’s most notable relationships throughout his career was with the University of Colorado at Boulder. Barnard helped the studio deliver 10 projects with the University over 30 years, playing an integral role in the University of Colorado Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Among those projects, Barnard lead the first phase of the Folsom Stadium Master Plan improvements, the CU Dal Ward Athletic Center, located at the North end of Folsom Stadium. The Athletic Center accommodates the needs of student athletes and the athletic department but also functions as a space for meetings, banquets, receptions, and other special events. The center dramatically enhanced the services and facilities available to students, athletes, the athletic department, and the University.
