We are excited to announce the grand opening of the Newark Civic Center in Newark, California. The Civic Center, which includes the David W. Smith City Hall, the Newark Police Station, and the Alan L. Nagy library, is the largest project ever undertaken in the city. The process was streamlined by the architects, builders, and engineers through the design-build delivery method, allowing it to be completed on time and on budget.
We collaborated with our Design-Build partner, Webcor Builders, on this project, which broke ground in 2019 and completed in November 2021. The team used bridging and schematic documents developed by Heller Manus Architects, in collaboration with Safdie Rabines Architects and McClaren Wilson & Lowrie, Inc. as a starting point for the project. Perkins&Will, as the Executive Architect and Architect of Record, further developed and refined the design and completed the project with Webcor.
The 84,130 square foot Civic Center includes three different buildings that evoke a distinct town center feel, creating a sense of community for Newark residents. One building houses Council Chambers and City administration services; another is a library; and the third is a police station, which includes an emergency dispatch center and training facilities. The three buildings are centered by a plaza that serves as a multi-function community event space. Ultimately, the new Civic Center aims to be a source of pride and community identification for the City of Newark.
