LONDON—Perkins&Will has appointed Andrew Mcmullan as design director and architecture practice leader of its London studio. In this new strategic role, Mcmullan will champion a culture of design excellence while helping clients navigate complex project challenges.
In support of life-enhancing design
A seasoned design leader with international experience, Mcmullan will guide the firm’s London studio as it continues to grow its reputation for bold, progressive, and ecologically responsible architecture. He will work with clients across sectors—from developers and institutions to community-led initiatives—helping shape resilient, future-ready environments that respond to the needs of people and the planet.
Internally, he will foster a collaborative and agile design culture that empowers teams to explore ideas, push boundaries, and deliver high-impact solutions at every scale. Mcmullan sees the London studio as a home for imagination—a place where ideas grow, ambitions take shape, and challenges become new opportunities. Clients bring ambition. The studio brings the imagination and expertise to make it real.
“Architecture is about more than buildings. It’s a way of looking at society and shaping the future we want to live in—creating cities that belong to people and the planet. It’s about big ideas rooted in real life, making places that are joyful, bring people together, and leave the world better than we found it,” says Mcmullan. “Our London studio is an accessible and welcoming place for anyone to come and talk to us about their ideas, ambitions, and challenges – and to discover how design can help make those ambitions real.”
A proven leader with a global perspective
Mcmullan views architecture as a way of understanding society and shaping the future we want to live in. His focus is on big ideas rooted in real life, making places that bring people together, create joy, and leave the world better than we found it.
Bringing over 25 years of experience to the role. He has contributed to a wide variety of projects, including regenerative masterplans, experiential retail, inclusive public spaces, and transformative commercial and mixed-use buildings. His work is globally recognized for enriching lives, fostering community connection, and supporting thriving, resilient places. A graduate of both the Architectural Association and Cambridge University, Mcmullan is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts (RSA) and a member of the UK Design Council. He frequently serves on international design juries and is a prominent voice in conversations exploring how architecture can address today’s environmental and social challenges.
He joins Perkins&Will at a time when a growing number of sectors in the UK are emphasizing sustainability, inclusion, and long-term impact of the built environment—principles that align closely with his values and design philosophy.
Elevating design culture through collaboration
Under Mcmullan’s leadership, the firm’s London studio will continue to drive cross-disciplinary thinking, purpose-led design, and future-forward solutions. “Andrew’s appointment marks an exciting chapter for us,” says Jo Wright, managing director of Perkins&Will’s London studio. “His entrepreneurial mindset, global perspective, and commitment to meaningful design make him an outstanding leader. He has a rare ability to unlock creative potential in projects of all types, and his approach perfectly aligns with our mission to create places where humanity and nature thrive together.”
