Whitby’s new Fieldgate Sport Complex, a major civic destination for recreation, competition, and community life, has opened.
Located at Two Gathering Place, the 159,800-square-foot facility reflects Whitby’s unique rural-urban identity while serving as a gateway for Brooklin and the broader community. The design process—including the project’s program and priorities—was informed by extensive engagement with community members. Their input played a central role in creating a facility that responds to evolving local needs and supports a wide range of users.
The multi-use complex brings together an aquatic centre, a double gymnasium with an indoor walking track, a twin-pad arena, and flexible indoor and outdoor spaces for training, competition, recreation, and gathering. It is also planned to include 14 pickleball courts, a senior soccer pitch, and a significant amount of additional recreation space. The facility is set to become the first recreation building in Canada to include a twin-pad arena designed to both LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building design standards. The design responds directly to Whitby’s newly introduced green building policy, using the project as a test case to help shape future sustainable development in the Town.
Accessibility and inclusion are woven throughout the project. An ambulatory experience, integrated accessible ramps and circulation, and gender-neutral bathrooms help make the facility welcoming and usable for a diverse range of visitors. The architecture and landscape work together to create a venue that is rooted in its site, responsive to climate, and aligned with the Town’s long-term goals.
A suspended installation entitled “We Come From the Stars – Anangoong Nidonjibaamin” by Indigenous artist Kathryn Corbière enriches the complex and contributes to a strong sense of place. Selected through a national call for Indigenous artists, the work brings cultural depth and an important artistic voice to the project.
Fieldgate Sport Complex stands as a shared civic space designed with the community, for the community—a place to connect, celebrate, and stay active for years to come.
