Since 2013, our Washington, DC studio has been supporting our neighborhood school, School Without Walls at Francis Stevens by hosting a supply drive every fall. For the past two years, our drive has exclusively focused on collecting “wellness” items to support two things: their Physical Education department and their recess program, which includes both indoor and outdoor recess activities. This drive is an excellent way to be the hands and feet of what our firm professes in terms of wellness and the benefits of active design. While we did not design their actual space–by donating parachutes, kickballs, double-dutch jump ropes, and TWISTER–we are contributing to keeping these young students active. By collecting puzzles like Jenga and Mancala, we are doing our part to keep young minds stimulated on rainy days when recess needs to be inside.
