The E. Todd Wheeler Health Fellowship is for emerging healthcare design and planning leaders. Named for the late architect E. Todd Wheeler, a design visionary and principal of the firm from 1936 to 1944 and again from 1957 to 1972, this fellowship will be awarded each year to up to three graduate interns who demonstrate a passion for advancing healthcare excellence through transformative built environments.
Todd Wheeler’s own dedication to healthcare excellence and design innovation defined his illustrious career. His work, which included 70 hospitals and nine schools of medicine, shaped post-war healthcare for a new generation and, as architectural historian Cor Wagenaar noted, “epitomized the promise of science, the victory of technology, and the prospect of a successful battle against old and new diseases.”
Wheeler’s endless quest for answers to healthcare design’s most pressing questions continues to inspire our practice today, and serves as the foundation for the fellowship that bears his name:
- Is the effect of the physical environment on human beings adverse or favorable? Can it be measured?
- Can the mechanized hospital be kept human?
- Can a hospital building…possess the quality of living things such as flexibility, adaptability, mobility, resilience, the ability to grow, to regenerate itself…?
- What does the future hold?
