Anne O’Shaughnessy

Associate Principal, Retail, London

Anne is a leader whose career encompasses strategy, client service, cross‑team collaboration, and implementation. Trained as a retail designer, she now guides complex projects for Portland Design, which joined Perkins&Will in 2015 and operates out of our London studio.

Her national and international projects span disciplines and typologies, ranging from retail brand launches to urban regeneration projects to master planning and multimodal transportation hubs.

Anne is known for encouraging ownership and fostering an open and inquisitive culture within her teams. She brings a vibrant, empathetic approach to her work, and she finds that the most enduring projects blend foresight, strategic vision, compelling storytelling, and the values that shape design. “We go beyond helping clients discover commercial value,” she says. “What’s the emotional experience? What will people feel? What excites them, moves them, makes them want to come back?”

We always think about what makes people stay or come back to the places we create. The biggest compliment people can give us is their time.
fun fact

An avid hiker, Anne has summited Mount Kilimanjaro, walked sections of the Appalachian Trail, backpacked in Newfoundland, and explored the highest Hindu temples in the Himalayas. Anne finds peace and a sense of perspective in the mountains.

“It grounds me to think that they’ve been there for millions of years,” she says. “And I enjoy the challenge of climbing and the freedom of unplugging from devices and experiencing nature.”
