Gonzalo Vargas

MSc, PGC, DipArch, BA (Hons)
Associate Principal, Health, London

Growing up in Peru, surrounded by a family of carpenters and leather makers, Gonzalo developed a passion for creativity and painting from an early age. However, it was his dream of studying in the UK that ultimately shaped his career path, culminating in a master’s degree from London South Bank University.

Gonzalo’s passion lies in healthcare architecture, where complexity and functionality intersect with the human experience. Over his 20-year international career, he has successfully led creative projects across the UK and Europe through a client-focused approach. From inception to completion, he delivers excellent design outcomes—creating spaces that optimize patient care, streamline workflows, and promote healing through thoughtful layouts, consideration of operational and maintenance factors, and innovative, sustainable solutions.

Gonzalo sees hospitals as deeply emotional spaces, where people face uncertainty and thoughtful design can make a meaningful difference. His work has ranged from rehabilitation-focused facilities, such as a healing haven for soldiers, to the complex design of Dublin’s new children’s hospital. For Gonzalo, it’s not the scale of the project that matters, but the opportunity to create environments that serve patients, staff, and communities with dignity and purpose.

His greatest achievement extends beyond architecture. Having emigrated from a developing country, Gonzalo takes pride in holding a leadership role at Perkins&Will, collaborating with like-minded colleagues and designing with purpose to ensure a meaningful impact on people’s lives.

Outside of work:

Gonzalo finds inspiration in the poetic architecture of Tadao Ando, enjoys reading, and stays engaged in politics. Outside of his projects, he is also deeply involved in the community and served as the director of a community complex in Chiswick Village, offering his expertise and leadership for over nine years.
