Julio Antonio Colón

AIA
Associate Principal, New York

As an architect with an affinity for solving complex problems, Julio views technical design as a crucial link between creative intent and built work. He serves as our New York studio’s technical director, supporting staff in all aspects of technical design, including detailing, risk management, quality assurance, and contract review. He also leads our internal technical training program and coordinates our firmwide Transcendent Detail Competition.

Julio was born in New York and raised in Puerto Rico. Just as his personal life is enriched by immersion in those distinct cultures, his professional life spans creative ideation with other architects and deeply detailed work with project teams, consultants, and partners. “It’s my job to bridge everyone’s concerns and find ways for all parties to arrive at understanding and consensus,” he says. He enjoys having a voice in developing artful solutions to practical challenges.

“I see the craft of design as the process by which our ideas are transformed into beautiful, tangible experiences that shape our reality. Without the physical integration of materials, systems, and assemblies that make our projects real, they remain in a theoretical realm.”
Julio is a strong advocate for innovation and has led the New York studio to produce some of the highest quality documentation sets within the firm.
Julio is an artist at heart. His passion for painting, film, architecture, music, and stories was fostered by his father and grandmother, who always left a door open for creative expression. Now he shares his passion with his children.
Julio likes to apply techniques like watercolor with a chaotic yet precise splatter form to create abstractions balanced with literal imagery.
Julio started practicing Chinese Kung Fu at a young age, after being influenced by martial arts in movies. Julio still practices today and has incorporated other forms of martial arts into his routine.
